In preparation for a longer bike tour, in addition to the destination, time and route planning, the considerations of the right equipment require special care. Duration and type of trip, character and profile of the route, climate zones and supply options on the way are essential criteria from which requirements for quality and scope of the equipment can be derived. You will not take a multi-month tour of Alaska with a tent from the discounter, nor will you go on an expedition through Africa or to the Australian outback with a low-end bicycle from the hardware store. During a river hike along the Danube or Loire, however, the demands on travelers and material are significantly lower and quite feasible with budget solutions. We present the suitable equipment for our Oman trip in three chapters on bicycle, tent and clothing.
